Isy Mekler: My name is Isy. I just celebrated my Bar Mitzvah a couple of months and in the past year, I started a project in order to provide books for children. I like to play soccer, swim and go sailing. Most of all,I have always loved to read. When I read I get absorbed into a world of imagination. I often laugh and sometimes cry when I am reading good stories. Books inspire me. Last year,in the sixth grade,I wrote a fictional letter to Shel Silverstein about his book, The Giving Tree, and how it taught me a lesson about giving. I received an honor from the Massachusetts Center for the Book and decided to use this theme for my Bar Mitzvah project. I have created the GIving Tree Project and have asked artists to decorate trees that will then be given to Reach Out and Read, a national literacy program. Reach Out and Read will auction the trees in Spring of 2012.
